PROJECT INTRODUCTION
Meridian Loft converts a former textile warehouse into a single-family residence, preserving the building's industrial character while inserting a contemporary living environment within its existing brick shell.
The design deliberately exposes rather than conceals the building's history, treating original structural elements as the primary architectural feature rather than something to be hidden behind new finishes.
DESIGN APPROACH
A new steel-and-glass atrium cut through the center of the original roof structure becomes the loft's defining feature, dropping daylight three stories down through the heart of the plan.
All principal living spaces face this atrium rather than the perimeter windows, so the rhythm of the day is experienced through its changing light long before anyone looks outside.
MATERIAL & LIGHT
Existing exposed brick, cast-iron columns, and heavy timber beams were retained throughout, cleaned and stabilized rather than replaced, and left deliberately unfinished in most rooms. New insertions use blackened steel and glass to stay visually distinct from the original fabric.
The atrium's glazing diffuses harsh midday sun into a soft, even wash that moves gradually across the brick walls, giving the industrial materials an unexpectedly warm quality by late afternoon.
SPATIAL EXPERIENCE
Living spaces are arranged as open platforms at varying levels around the atrium void, connected by a single steel stair rather than enclosed corridors, preserving the warehouse's original sense of uninterrupted volume.
Only bedrooms and bathrooms are fully enclosed, inserted as freestanding volumes within the larger shell so the original structure remains legible as a continuous space around them.

SITE & CONTEXT
Located within a former industrial district now transitioning to residential use, the project intentionally kept the building's exterior largely unchanged to preserve its street presence and contribution to the block's character.
Nearly all architectural intervention was concentrated inward, allowing the loft to insert a fully modern residence without erasing the neighborhood's visible industrial history.
ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE
The original warehouse's simple rectangular massing and regular column grid were left untouched, with new elements inserted as independent volumes rather than altering the overall building form.
This restraint keeps the composition legible as a converted industrial building rather than a new construction, letting the contrast between old shell and new insertion carry the architectural interest.
INDOOR & OUTDOOR
A rooftop terrace, accessed directly from the atrium stair, extends the living space onto the original roof deck, offering wide views across the surrounding district's rooftops and water towers.
Large pivoting steel windows on the ground floor open the main living area onto a small private courtyard carved from what was once loading-dock space, softening the transition to street level.
COURTYARD CONCEPT
The atrium remains the loft's single organizing idea, its light and volume reaching every level and ensuring that no space within the converted shell feels disconnected from the whole.
Even the enclosed bedroom volumes borrow light from the atrium through internal glazed openings, keeping the sense of connection intact throughout the home.


ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE
Retaining the existing masonry shell avoided the substantial embodied carbon cost of new construction, while the atrium's stack-effect ventilation helps draw warm air upward and out during summer months.
High-performance glazing was used exclusively in new insertions, leaving the historic brick envelope's thermal upgrade concentrated in a carefully detailed internal insulation layer that preserves the original exterior appearance.
DESIGN OUTCOME
Meridian Loft shows how a building's industrial past can be carried forward as a living architectural asset rather than erased in favor of a purely contemporary interior.
It offers a model for adaptive reuse where new and old remain clearly distinguishable, each strengthening the other rather than one dominating the design.
