PROJECT INTRODUCTION

Solstice Pavilion is a glass-and-steel desert residence designed around the precise path of the sun, with its plan and structure calibrated to the solstice light angles specific to its latitude.

The architecture treats sunlight as a building material in its own right, shaping walls, screens, and openings around exactly how and when light should enter each space.

DESIGN APPROACH

A shallow reflecting pool at the center of the pavilion catches and doubles the desert light, casting rippling reflections across the ceiling of the main living space throughout the day.

Positioned on the building's central north-south axis, the pool aligns exactly with the sun's path on the summer solstice, when light strikes it directly at midday.

MATERIAL & LIGHT

Structural steel, low-iron glass, and pale poured concrete keep the material palette bright and reflective, amplifying the desert's natural light rather than absorbing it. Perforated metal screens filter the harshest midday sun into a soft dotted pattern.

At sunrise and sunset, low horizontal light passes almost uninterrupted through the pavilion's glazed walls, briefly filling the entire structure with a warm, saturated glow.

SPATIAL EXPERIENCE

The plan is a single open pavilion with few interior walls, organized instead by freestanding screens that filter both light and views without fully enclosing any one space.

Sleeping and bathing areas are the only fully enclosed volumes, tucked to one side so the central pavilion can remain a continuous, light-filled space throughout the day.

SITE & CONTEXT

Set on an open desert plateau with unobstructed horizons in every direction, the pavilion was oriented using solar studies specific to the site's exact latitude and seasonal sun path.

This precision allowed the design to control light with unusual accuracy, producing predictable, dramatic lighting events tied to specific days and hours of the year.

ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE

The building's form is a simple flat-roofed rectangle raised slightly above grade, kept deliberately minimal so its lighting effects, rather than its massing, provide the architectural drama.

A deep perimeter overhang doubles as a sun-calibration device, its exact depth calculated to admit low winter sun while blocking high summer sun from the interior.

INDOOR & OUTDOOR

Floor-to-ceiling glazing on all four sides removes any hard boundary between the pavilion and the surrounding desert, with the covered perimeter walkway serving as a shaded transitional zone.

The reflecting pool extends slightly beyond the building's edge, visually connecting the interior water feature to a matching exterior channel that traces the pavilion's perimeter.

COURTYARD CONCEPT

The reflecting pool and its solstice alignment remain the pavilion's defining idea, turning what could be a simple desert glass box into a structure tuned precisely to a single astronomical event each year.

Even outside of the solstice itself, the pool continues to animate the ceiling with moving light for every hour the sun is above the horizon.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSE

Deep overhangs and perforated screens keep direct solar gain manageable despite extensive glazing, significantly reducing cooling loads through the desert's hottest months.

The reflecting pool also contributes light evaporative cooling to the immediate surroundings, and low-iron glazing was selected specifically to maximize daylight without the added heat gain of standard glass.

DESIGN OUTCOME

Solstice Pavilion shows how a house can be designed as a precise instrument for experiencing light and time, rather than simply as shelter from the desert's extremes.

It offers a model of architecture calibrated to celestial rhythm, where the passage of the year itself becomes part of the everyday experience of living in the house.
